Red Sunset Maple Trees

Asked December 23, 2017, 1:04 AM EST

I have a 41/2' parking strip in front of our city lot in Portland. Would you recommend planting a Red Sunset Maple? What are the pros and cons of doing so? I've read that Red Sunset Maples need a much larger area to avoid significant root damage to our sewer system and landscape so don't want to create problems for ourselves.

The City of Portland has a list of approved trees for street planting. The trees are sorted by height restrictions, so check your location and see which trees will fit.

Red Sunset Maple (Acer rubrum 'Franksred') is listed as 40-50 feet high by the Missouri Botanical Gardens http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=b110 .
