Maple trees not dropping leaves

Asked December 19, 2017, 3:04 PM EST

Expert, I live in Carroll County and this fall many of our maple leaves have failed to completely drop their leaves. They took a long time to slowly turn brown but many still remain although shriveled & brown. What’s up? Disease, bugs, death. Silver maples are normal, red, sugar, Japanese red & a few non-maples not too good. Thanks for your help.

The unusually warm temperatures that extended into December have caused many trees to drop leaves exceptionally late or only partially.

Under normal conditions, a tree that does not have the energy to drop leaves is usually in decline. Keep an eye on your trees. You will know by next spring if some of your trees are declining because they will either not bud out or leaf out poorly with small leaves or thin foliage.
