What to do about sapsucker damage to holly tree

Asked December 11, 2017, 5:23 PM EST

I noticed there are holes bored into the trunk of our holly tree. I looked at pictures online and it looks like sapsucker damage. They don’t completely circle the trunk but it is extensive. Is there anything I can do to prevent further damage and possibly save the tree?

Trees can easily tolerate much more sapsucker pecking than is pictured. Your tree should be fine. It's not intuitive, that's true, but you do not need to take any steps to prevent the sapsucker feeding. Here is our webpage about this, which does include preventive measures if you're so inclined: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/woodpeckers-and-sapsuckers
