Can I trim my yew now?

Asked December 4, 2017, 3:06 PM EST

Hello, we are trying to put up our holiday lights and find that our yews are too overgrown. Would it hurt them if I trimmed them now? I also have a cane-type shrub, but not sure what it is, that is quite overgrown as well. (I would have done it over the summer, and really wanted to, but I was too ill.)

You should not be pruning anything this time of year. If you absolutely MUST trim some on your yews in order to put up lights, then you need to do it. However, you will probably find that the cut ends will be brown in the spring. Trim the least amount possible. Do not trim your cane-type shrub. Here are a couple links. One on pruning your yews and the other on general pruning of trees and shrubs. http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/landscaping/maint/evergreen.html#3a http://www3.extension.umn.edu/county/stearns/county-horticulture-educator/article/pruning-trees-and-...
