Lawn problem

Asked December 2, 2017, 8:57 PM EST

My trees dumped so many leaves this year that it’s really taken out large areas of grass. I want to seed and cover the seed with mulch or peat. Is it better to wait till spring to reseed or will it be ok to do it now and take advantage of all the rain?

Fall is a great time to reseed a lawn, but temperatures now are getting low for germinating lawn seed (optimum temperatures for germinating grass seed is 60-85°F). It would probably be better to wait until spring. This article gives good information on seeding lawns, Practical Lawn Establishment and Renovation, https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/ec1550.pdf.
