Growing turmeric outdoors

Asked November 30, 2017, 7:11 AM EST

I was given turmeric rhizome that was harvested this fall. I would like to give it proper dormancy trearment so that I can safely plant it in the spring. What do you recommend both for winter dormancy and spring planting conditions in Prince George's county!

Prince George's County Maryland

Turmeric is a tropical, native to Southeast Asia, and so is a tender perennial here. Some people grow it in containers that they take inside for the winter.
We don't have a great deal of information about growing it here.

It doesn't need a winter dormancy per se, but we'd suggest keeping it in a cool, dry, dark place, perhaps in an open container of peat moss which has been barely dampened.
Plant it in a container or outside in the early spring after the last frost date, which is usually around Mother's Day.
