Buckthorn Invasion

Asked November 29, 2017, 9:10 AM EST

I am doing a school project on buckthorn and need to ask an expert some questions for this project. I was wondering how is buckthorn an invasive species? How can we manage that invasive population here? Is there anything we can do on a local level to help?

Buckthorn was introduced from Europe and has no native pests to control its growth. It spreads rapidly choking out native trees and shrubs. As an example 30 years ago Minnehaha Falls understory was open. Now it is filled in with buckthorn. Eradication is how it is managed. On a local level remove buckthorn from your property and join volunteer groups to remove buckthorn from public properties. Look up buckthorn busters and buthorn removal for opportunities and information.
