When the sapling is planted outdoors, does the main stock (to which the grafted tiny branch is attached) get cut off at the point of the graft?

Thank you for your question about apple grafting. It is difficult to answer your question without knowing what type of graft you used, and how much you believe you need to cut off. Generally, you don't remove tissue, but there are a couple of different grafting techniques that allow for some reduction. Here is a link to an Extension article on propagation.
