Potassium intake

Asked November 19, 2017, 12:25 PM EST

Does all hamburger meat have potassium? Several stores, Sprouts, Kroger have no potassium amount on their nutrition label. Also is there a way to get a nutritional list for specific foods i.e. Strip loin steak, oatmeal, vegetables? The sites on the net vary on the same food item. Thank you in advance.

Joe, Thank you for your question. I apologize for the delayed response, as I have been out of the office on holiday.

Potassium is found in unprocessed meats, and milk, as well as fruits and vegetables such as leafy greens, fruit from vines, and citrus.

Current nutrition labeling does not require potassium be listed on the nutrition label; however, the FDA updated nutrition labels will require that this nutrient be listed in the future (required by July 2018).

You can find more information about the FDA Nutrition label requirements at: https://www.fda.gov/downloads/Food/IngredientsPackagingLabeling/LabelingNutrition/UCM511646.pdf; information about potassium rich foods at: http://extension.colostate.edu/topic-areas/nutrition-food-safety-health/potassium-and-the-diet-9-355.
