Scales on Japanese Cherry Tree branches

Asked November 18, 2017, 9:02 AM EST

I have a Japanese Cherry Tree - the kind with the double bloom flowers. A few of the branches have a cream colored scale growing on the branches. I would like to know if I just need to have these branches pruned or if the entire tree has a disease.

We viewed your photos. This looks like a type of wood rot on the branches. Various fungi can cause rots. All you can do is prune out affected branches when the tree is dormant. See our website for more information http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/wood-rots-and-decay-trees-and-shrubs
