Could you send me a photo showing the affected canes?

Sorry unable to send picture. We cut and burned all the diseased plants. From the looks of the plants it looked like spur blight.

Take a look at this article " Spur Blight in Brambles" Penn State Extension.
After having stated that blackberries are mostly immune, the recommends a spray regime . The sprays are effective for several diseases plaguing cane fruit. Good air circulation between canes and quick drying of same between rains can be accomplished by pruning. You have already done the clean up for the fall as recommended. Good luck next year.
