Lilac trees

My lilac is 12' tall and I would like to prune it so I can reach the blooms. How and when is the best time to do this?

Thank you for your question about pruning your lilac. Two rules about pruning these plants: in the spring and only a third of it at a time. This Extension article explains: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/gardening/prune-lilacs-soon-after-bloom The timimg rule applies to rhododendrons as well, since they have been putting on buds all summer. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
