Unknown Rodent - Need ID

Asked October 30, 2017, 2:47 PM EDT

Would you be able to identify this rodent that was caught in a glue trap? Could it be a squirrel or maybe bushy tailed woodrat? Would love your assistance.

Thank you.

The wide fringe of skin between the legs makes me think flying squirrel. Both the Southern and Northern flying squirrels occur in the northern Lower Peninsula.
The easiest distinguishing characteristic is a difference in the white belly hairs.
The Southern species the hairs are white to the base and in the Northern species the hairs are white at the tip and darker at the base. The head and body of the northern species is slights larger (~6 inches) than the southern species (5.5 inches).
Sorry this took so long, I was only assigned the question this morning.
