Hello! I have noticed a large amount of hornets/wasps about ten to fifteen feet off the ground near some trees in my yard. One came in the house last week and we killed it. (See attached) It's large- seems about double the size of a regular hornet. What kind of was/hornet is it? What advice do you have about pest management? We have a three year old Future Terp and I'm worried she'll be stung! Thanks!

This looks like a European hornet. They can be attracted to the light and may have come in inadvertently. Here is our webpage http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/european-hornets

If the insects are not a threat to you or others then you should leave it. Hornets feed on a variety of insect pests and are beneficial.
The workers will die back with the first several hard freezes and the queen will overwinter elsewhere.
