Fuzzy growth on dwarf maple

Asked October 13, 2017, 10:43 AM EDT

There is a fuzzy growth on a dwarf maple in our community common ground. Can you identify it and provide treatment recommendations if warranted? We are located in western Baltimore County (Lochearn area). I have attached 3 photos of the same tree. Thank you.

That's pretty cool!
Those are a type of lichen.
They are not hurting your tree and can (and should) be left alone.

Here is more information on this interesting life form: http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/lichens-trees-and-shrubs

Be sure to click on the link at the bottom of that page, "I'm Lichen It!" to see the type you seem to have here. (http://extension.umd.edu/learn/i%E2%80%99m-lichen-it-peak-season-lichen-peeping)
