clematis pruning information

Asked October 11, 2017, 7:56 PM EDT

I have lived at my current Saint Paul home for the past four years, but just today (10/11/2017) discovered a clematis blooming under the foliage of day lilies and a peony on the south side of my garage, in the alley. I would like to take care of it, and am reading about the different types of clematis and varying pruning requirements. Do you happen to know what kind of clematis this is (see attached photos), or do you have an educated guess as to when this variety should be pruned? I am new to caring for any type of clematis, so any insight you are willing to share would be most appreciated. Thank you so much for your help! Denise Tennessen

It's beautiful! Donahues located in Northfield is the company that supplies most of the clematis to retail suppliers. Their website has lots of information on growing clematis. They have a section on pruning in the spring. They recommend mulching for the winter, although I do not mulch mine after the first year. Your variety might be Alaina. See: https://donahuesclematis.com/product-category/pink-varieties/ The overall website is: http://www.donahuesgreenhouse.com/ Click on the right growing clematis and there will be a drop down menu, click on pruning.
