I am looking for suggestions of 3-5' ornamental grasses that can tolerate full shade planted under a walnut tree. I am located in zone 6a.

Hello,

Tall ornamental grasses are full sun plants. While they may tolerate shade, they will not reach their typical mature height in heavy shade, and they may not produce seed heads.

Here is a list of ornamental grasses, several which tolerate shade and walnut- see the individual descriptions for which ones---

There are shade alternatives to the tall grasses, such as maple-leaf viburnum or fragrant sumac. Compare walnut tolerant shrubs and shade tolerant shrubs listed in these publications- the ones appearing on both would be possibilities---
