backyard grape growing

Asked October 10, 2017, 2:08 PM EDT

We are thinking we would like to grow grapes, either for wine making or table grapes (such as Champagne grapes). We would have no experience, and need some suggestions. We have about a 10' arbor. Can anyone guide us?

Thank you for your inquiry. First, you must determine which kind of grapes you want to grow (table vs. wine). For a typical urban backyard, table grapes are the best, since it would take a lot of grapes to make a batch of home made wine, and of course, more effort. The grapes are grown differently too, for optimum flavor. Pruning methods differ also. I would also suggest investigating viticulture websites online to get an idea the whole process of wine making, before you even start planting. Though labor-intensive, it is immensely satisfying to be able to make your own vintage. Once you've decided on which kind of grapes you want to grow, then I can give you a list of resources on line that would be helpful with your endeavors.
Good luck!
