Timber Rattlesnake

Asked October 8, 2017, 11:55 AM EDT

I found a baby timber rattlesnake last night around my garage in Finksburg in Carroll County. I have suspected a snake has been living in my garage but now I think it is the mother timber rattlesnake and that there may be a lot of these babies. I have small children and live in a neighborhood with many other children. Please advise if I should just call an exterminator or if this is an issue of interest to the extension.

Carroll County Maryland wildlife black rat snake snake

The snake in the photo looks like a juvenile black rate snake and is harmless. They help keep the rodent population down. See our publication on snakes for tips on discouraging snakes from coming close to your house or building http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_images/programs/hgic/Publications/HG64_Snakes.pdf
