Hydrangea shrubs bloom on new wood so can be pruned either late fall or in spring. How much you prune back is dependent on your preference for the look and size of the shrub you would like as well as the variety you have. If you have a compact shrub it often will need very little pruning aside from keeping its shape. The larger varieties grow quickly and may require you to be more vigorous in taking branches from it.
