Planting choice?

Asked September 18, 2017, 8:28 PM EDT

Hello - I would like to plant a tree or shrub outside my front door in an area 10' x 20' next to the 2 story house. Our problem is that it faces west and gets full sun all day increasing the temperature by up to 25 degrees in the heat of summer. It is extremely HOT. The soil is a mix of clay and some sand under rock and mulch. I would like to green up the area. Juniper was suggested by our landscaper. We have considered sumac trees. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much.

Staghorn sumac is a good choice, it is hardy from Georgia to Winipeg. It is a tough plant. Make sure whatever tree you plant gets an inch of water a week. Juniper would also work.
