Application of Milky Spore

I am using Milky Spore on my lawn to address grubs/Japanese beetles. I have seen instructions for applying Milky Spore by distributing small amounts at four feet intervals, in a "grid" pattern. Is there a good reason to apply in this way rather than to use a hand spreader to distribute over the entire lawn surface?
