Lawn feritlizer question

Asked September 18, 2017, 3:04 PM EDT

I'm planning on doing only one fertilizer application on my lawn this fall. When would be the best time to apply a winterizer fertilizer? I live in the St. Paul area. Thanks

Thank you for the question. Late August to early September are the best times to fertilize your lawn in the fall so you need to do it very soon or skip it until next year. Fertilizing too late causes a burst of tender new growth that may not be able to harden off before the ground freezes. Here is our publication on fertilizing lawns. The schedule is toward the bottom.

Thank you for contacting Extension.
