What is this? Type of Squash/Pumpkin? Edible?

Asked September 13, 2017, 4:17 PM EDT

Hi! I have a crop of several of these fruits in my garden this year and have no idea what they are. I'm sure that they are in the squash family, but have never seen the likes of them. They have the shape of pumpkins but not the color. I thought I was growing acorn squash, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. Is it edible?

You are correct that this is not an acorn squash, nor does it look quite like a pumpkin. One possibility might be an apple gourd squash, which has a shape like that. We can't say for sure. It might be a hybrid (cross between two types) of squash. If you planted it from a seed or transplant, it is possible that it was a crossed variety -- or even mislabeled. Regardless of the type, all squashes are edible.
