Discoloration on Cherry Leaves

Asked September 13, 2017, 11:08 AM EDT

My juvenile cherry trees are developing a rust like discoloration on the leaves (in addition to having some trouble with the green Japanese beetles munch them). Could you help me identify the issue and offer and advice for a remedy? Thank you. -Jay

Thanks for your question and the great pictures, Jay. Do you happen to have either a cedar or juniper tree near this cherry tree? There is a group of fungi, called rust, that have those trees as hosts, and then they infect nearby members of the Prunus family, which your cherry tree is. Operating theory; need more info. Thanks!
