Insect or fungus on bean stalks

We've had a lot of rain over the past two months, not to mention the temperature at night had dipped into the 60s and even 50s! Could this be the cause of the problem shown in the attached photos? I've included a photo of the type of pole bean. I do not know it's kind. Thank you. Linda

We think your bean leaves/stems might be showing symptoms of Ascochyta leaf spot, which is a fungal disease. There really isn't any cure for this. The best thing would be to harvest whatever you can, remove all of the plant material (dispose of it in the trash rather than composting), and plant beans in a different area of the garden next year, if possible. That's really all you can do.
