Disposing of SWD infested fruit

Asked September 4, 2017, 12:28 PM EDT

Hello, It looks like my Brooks plum has an SWD infestation. Can I safely compost the bad fruit? Thanks, Marianne

Thanks for your composting question, Marianne. At least one Extension service does not recommend composting diseased fruit, since compost heaps/bins rarely get hot enough to kill the larva. As this (very excellent) source says:

"Do not bury infested fruit or place fruit in a compost pile."

The Extension writer also has some helpful information about sanitation to stem, insofar as is possible, future infestations. Good luck!
