Trimming trees

Asked September 1, 2017, 10:40 AM EDT

We are having our roof replaced next week, there are over-hanging branches that needs to be cut, is it safe to trim these back - they are mostly oak trees. And if we do should we spray the cut limbs with the black pruning spray.

To avoid Oak Wilt, oaks should not be pruned from April to October. If you must have them pruned, the fresh cut should be sprayed with latex paint to mask the scent of the fresh cut from the beetles that carry the disease. Do not try to prune them yourself. That can be very dangerous. It is not worth getting injured. Contact a certified arborist who has the proper equipment and training. You can find one by going to this web site and clicking on Find An Arborist. You can put in your zip code: http://www.treesaregood.org/
