Weed ID help please

Asked August 31, 2017, 9:08 AM EDT

This weed grows abundantly in the Harpers Ferry area. It is an annual and is found in waste areas, forest edges, and roadsides. It gets to around 3 feet tall, has purple stalks and purple-tinged leaves, and the flowers (Sept) are in spikes growing from the axils with tiny, insignificant purple flowers. Despite how common it is here,I have been unable to find it in any book. Can you help? Thanks, Randy

Hi Randy.

Thank you for submitting this question. I think your weed in question is something called Beefsteak Plant...sometimes called Perilla Mint...or Perilla frutescena.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks Ashley-well done-you nailed it! I didn't realize the leaves were aromatic (not very, but it's there) so everything fits.

Thanks again,
