Rust on Oak

Asked August 30, 2017, 7:09 PM EDT

Hello! We have what I believe to be a northern red oak on our property. It is showing some browning on the leaves and I'm hoping this is not oak wilt. I've attached some pictures below. Can you tell me what this is and how we should treat it? We have a several other oaks that I want to protect if possible. Thanks! Mary

This is neither oak wilt nor rust. Oak wilt would cause the leaves to fall off entirely. The symptoms on the leaves of your tree are indicative of anthracnose, a fungal disease. There is information about this disease, and management strategies, on the following page of our website. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/shade-tree-anthracnose-trees
