I planted new strawberries this year and I read that one should take off any blossoms or fruit for the first year. What should I do for next year?

For next year, allow the strawberries to bloom and then enjoy the fruits! Take a look at the following web page for information on providing winter protection for the plants. In addition, the following page has recommendations for fertilizing strawberries in their second year of growth:

When the strawberry fruits are developing, you might want to use a floating row cover or tulle fabric to exclude birds from " stealing" them, if that becomes a problem.
