White oak borer

Asked August 21, 2017, 1:37 PM EDT

Hello! Our neighbor has a white oak very close to our very old and huge white oak. It appears to have borers. Not only has it been a challenge getting this thing pruned, because of permits because we live on Rt. 99, but now we need to prevent our tree from these wood borers. Can you suggest a preventive instead of an insecticide?!

The best prevention for borers is to keep the tree as healthy as possible. Keep the tree well watered during dry periods, make sure mulch is no thicker than several inches and away from the trunk, and prune dead wood. You will have to check with the highway department about getting it pruned, if need be.
