What is the best upright evergreen for zone 4 in shade?
Washington County Minnesota
You are looking for the upright yew Capitata. It does beautifully in shade and when sheared, becomes thicker. The only requirement is that you water it on a regular basis. The moisture is important the first few years until it has a chance to root well. You also should water this (and every evergreen) until the ground freezes each fall. Evergreens lose moisture all winter and cannot replace it because the ground is frozen. So they need to go into winter almost overwatered. http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/PlantFinder/PlantFinderDetails.aspx?kempercode=c237
