Black Walnut ripening

Asked August 21, 2017, 12:05 PM EDT

The recent heavy wind caused many black walnuts in my community to fall off the tree. My question is, are these nuts ripe enough to harvest at this time or should they just be thrown away?

Hi:
The nuts are ripe when they turn from green to yellow-green. Also, if you push the skin in with your thumb/finger, it will leave an indentation.
