Bees on hummingbird feeders

Asked August 19, 2017, 2:12 PM EDT

Several weeks ago, large numbers of honeybees began using our hummingbird feeders. The hummingbirds are often unable to use the feeders because of all the bees. I repainted all the yellow ports red, but it has made no difference. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your hummingbird feeder question. Your instincts are right: honeybees are attracted to yellow; hummers to red. Here is a link to a marvelous article on the subject that should answer all your questions. They may not all work but know that, as fall approaches, the bees will be hibernating or staying mostly in the hive, but many species of hummers will remain to use the feeders all winter long.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
