Can Zucchini be saved?

Asked August 18, 2017, 5:11 PM EDT

This is a patio/ shrub sized plant. It had borer but surgically removed and finally began bearing this week. Squash bugs have been hand picked. Today's zucchini had whilst fuzzy growth that washed off. The stems look abraded. Should I remove or can I nurse it to health? Thanks, Barbara

It looks like you still have some good healthy growth on this plant. If it's still putting out new blossoms, keep it. Even after squash borers are removed, these can still put out new squashes for awhile. The "fuzzy growth" might be powdery mildew. We are nearing the end of the season and these problems aren't uncommon. We wouldn't give up on this plant just yet since it does appear to have some good healthy foliage. Keep it and see if you can get a few more squash.
