Transplanting a Rhododendron

Asked August 15, 2017, 9:04 AM EDT

When's the best time in S.E. Michigan to transplant a rhododendron, in the Fall or Spring? Also, any special transplant instructions to improve success?

Thanks, L. Balog

In a cold climate, early spring would be the best time to transplant. If you need to transplant in fall, get them in well before the ground freezes. First prepare the new hole, be sure to dig up as much of the root system as possible, and transplant into their new location as quickly as possible. The American Rhododendron Society has good information on transplanting rhododendrons and azaleas at: http://www.rhododendron.org/transplant.htm

Minnesota Extension also has good information on Rhododendron and Azaleas at: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/yard-garden/flowers/azaleas-rhododendrons-for-minnesota/
