Maple tree roots

Asked August 15, 2017, 8:57 AM EDT

My 8 yr. old maple tree has a large root growing above ground right next to the trunk. The trunk is 27 inches in diameter. Soon it and the trunk will grow into each other. Can I cut that portion of the root out?

That root should be cut off. I would wait until next spring because depriving the tree of a large root when it is cooler and rain is likely is best. We can still expect some very hot weather and trees should be going dormant now and need the food stored in the roots.
