Identify large sppider

Asked August 6, 2017, 10:57 AM EDT

This 3+ inch spider has taken up residence. European house spiders (I understand are good spiders) and wolf spiders (bad, bad??). Anyway if you can identify them that would be good and help determine to kill it or not.

Thank you for attaching the image. Yes, It does appear to be a giant house spider, Eratigena atrica (Tegenaria gigantea). And yes, they are helpful spiders.

Wolf spiders are close relatives which are also considered helpful. To tell the truth, all spiders are considered helpful because they help us limit unwanted insects in our homes, gardens, and landscapes.

If you still have the spider, you can take it to the Lane County Extension Service office to have its identity verified. Details at http://extension.oregonstate.edu/lane/gardens. The Master Gardeners are available Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m..
