Mulch from tree with apple scab

Asked August 1, 2017, 9:06 PM EDT

We have a large apple tree that has apple scab. We have been fighting the disease unsuccessfully for several year. We plan to cut the tree down. Could we safely chip up the wood (not the leaves) and use it as mulch in our garden, or does the wood itself harbor the apple scab spores? Thanks!

Thank you for the question. Research based literature points out that the spores harbor in infected leaves and fruits, not the wood. It should be fine to use the wood for mulch.

Thank you!
