Viney Invasive

Asked July 31, 2017, 1:51 PM EDT

Lead a BayWise Yard Visit in Eastport (Annapolis). The home owner has an extremely invasive vine I have never seen before. It completely covers small plants in a day or two, and climbs up everywhere. I have looked on line and in all the invasives books I have and cannot find it. The leaves range from about 1 inches to 3 inches. I sure hope you can help, this stuff is more invasive that mile a minute! Can you please help?

The leaf arrangement and venation suggest this might be Chinese yam. https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=1850

Take a look at the following page for a description of the characteristics to compare with what you have. https://www.invasiveplantatlas.org/subject.html?sub=4527

Chinese yam is invasive in Maryland.

This may also be a species of clematis.
