Dog Damage to tree

Asked July 31, 2017, 1:04 PM EDT

My dog has stripped some bark off of an apple tree. About one half of the bark is missing from a 8 inch tree about 18 inches above the ground. Can I save the tree? Should I cover the damaged area or how should I treat it? Thank You

There is nothing you can do to fix the damage. That is a lot of damage and I think that it is very likely that the tree will die. If you decide to replace it or have other trees that could be damaged you will need to use some sort of protection for the tree such as some hardware cloth that the dog can't get through. Make sure that it isn't too tight and that you replace it as the tree grows.
