Oakleaf Hydrangea

Asked July 24, 2017, 3:34 PM EDT

I have several oakleaf hydrangea that have become rather tall (6-7 feet). I would like to trim them by a least a foot. When is the best time of year to do this and will it cause the hydrangea not to bloom the following season? Thank you. Bethesda, MD

Hydrangea quercifolia, Oakleaf hydrangea – Flowers on previous year’s growth. Typically does not require pruning but if needed, in spring only remove dead wood. Otherwise, Prune after flowering.
