Looking for medium to fast-growing shade tree

Asked July 20, 2017, 2:59 PM EDT

I live just west of Pleasant Hill, OR and spot where I need a shade tree is West- facing afternoon sun. Need it to be medium to fast-growing. Mature hgt 20-30 ft and width 20 ft. Would prefer color either thru flowers or leaves, but not the most important factor. Needs to be very hardy and provide medium to dense shade for house. Prefer umbrella shape. Will provide shade for nearby Rhoddies. Can you help?

Choosing a shade tree for your yard requires a lot of thought about space, size and look. It is obvious you have realized that and have specific features in mind. That should make it fairly easy to narrow down the choices by aesthetics. OSU Extension has two great tools you can use to help you pic the perfect tree. You can search for possible tree selections by shape, color, size, etc. with OSU's Landscape Plants Search Website. Additionally, the Extension publication and app Selecting, Planting and Caring for a New Tree also has some suggestions based on flowers, size, water usage, etc. and offers tips on planting, spacing, and initial care. Hope you find your perfect fit!
