catepillar identification

Asked July 19, 2017, 6:15 PM EDT

Hello, I am curious about a caterpillar I found eating the leaves on Blood Sorrel that is about 5 years old. I found it during the first week in June. It left in after week or so and I have not seen any since then. Can you please tell me what kind of caterpillar it is. Thank you.

This is a type of Sphinx moth (Hyles) caterpillar. There is a great deal of variability of the colorings and markings so we are hesitant to nail it down to a specific species, but it is similar to the Galium sphinx and the White-Lined Sphinx.
He is almost ready to pupate so won't cause much more damage so we would leave him be.
