European Hornets

Asked July 19, 2017, 8:56 AM EDT

Good morning we had a very large European hornets nest in the woods beside my house. They have become very aggressive and children and pets I was being stung. Do you have recommendations on how to control this nest. Do these type of hornets need to be relocated or should they be extinguished? Also, do you recommend a certain pest control company to handle this removal or extinguishing? Thank you so much,

It would be a good idea to identify what type of bee you are dealing with. Go to our website and view photos. http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/insects/stinging-and-biting

If the insects are not a threat to you or others then you should leave it. Hornets feed on a variety of insect pests and are beneficial.
The workers will die back with the first several hard freezes and the queen will overwinter elsewhere.

If they are a threat to you, then consider control. Here is some information and control on the bald faced hornet and the European hornet. You can contact a pest control company or a bee keeper to control them
