What large flying insect is this?

Asked July 18, 2017, 1:22 PM EDT

I was out in my front garden and this cojoined duo of identical insects flew by me and landed on my window shutter. I've never seen anything like them. I assume they are some kind of moth, but the sounded more like a bee or wasp when they few by me. As the pictures show, they are pretty large. What are they? Jim

This is a tiger bee fly (Xenox tigrinus). http://bugguide.net/node/view/2803
These are common in eastern North America. It is a parasite of carpenter bees.
