zucchini buds dropping off

Asked July 18, 2017, 9:58 AM EDT

I got my zucchini plants in late this year. So they have just started getting blossoms, but I've noticed that I have a few blossoms laying on the ground before the flower has even opened.

In summer squash plants, the male flowers open first, before the plant starts producing the female flowers. These male flowers will drop off. There is essentially nothing for them to do until the female flowers open. This is normal. Just be patient until the plant starts to develop female flowers, usually 1-2 weeks after the male flowers appear. http://extension.umd.edu/growit/vegetable-profiles-summer-squash

Another reason flowers drop is stress (e.g., heat stress). If your plant looks healthy overall, then just give it more time to develop the female flowers.
