Can anyone identify this pod?

Asked July 16, 2017, 1:18 PM EDT

I live in a wooded area outside of Traverse City. I found this pod on a petunia plant that was hanging from a very very large pine tree. Can anyone identify this for me? When I first found it, there was a hole in the center that closed up the next day.

I can only guess about this without being able to see it in person. I think it is a nest of a solitary bee or wasp species. There are several species which build nests from mud and other ingredients, then fill the inside space with food, lay and egg on the food, and then seal it up (hence the hole that was closed up by the time you took the photo). If it was a bee, the stored food would be pollen and nectar mixed into a dough-like material. If it was made by a wasp, the food would be paralyzed insects or spiders.

Thank you. I'll let you know if anything hatches!
