lilac tree dead branches/leaves

Asked July 14, 2017, 4:25 PM EDT

I'm trying to figure out what is wrong with our lilac tree that we planted 8-10 years ago. See pictures attached. I cut out 2 limbs/leaves brown 6 feet long that died recently as can be seen in one photo where leaves were brown. We live in Lakeville, MN. Thanks for any insight you can provide.

The crack in the trunk, at the least, has opened the heart of the tree to disease. A deep crack will cause rot to form from within and slowly kill the tree. .Trees can live a long time with significant wounds but once the flow of water and nutrients is stopped the upper leaves and branches can't survive.
An arborist can evaluate the tree and tell you how extensive the damage is and the likelihood the tree will survive.
